Engineering starts with curiosity. Try these simple activities to design, test, improve, and learn from the world around you.
Build a Paper Bridge
Challenge: Design a bridge that can span a gap and hold as much weight as possible.
Materials: Paper, books, tape, and small objects for testing.
How to try it: Place two books a short distance apart. Build a bridge using paper and tape, then test it with small objects. Change the shape or materials and test again.
What to explore: Which folds make the bridge stronger? How does the distance between the supports affect the design?
Test Insulation
Challenge: Find out which material keeps water warm or cold the longest.
Materials: Cups, warm or cold water, paper, fabric, foil, cardboard, and a timer.
How to try it: Wrap cups with different materials. Measure the water temperature at the start and again after 15, 30, and 45 minutes. Record your results.
What to explore: Which material slows temperature change most effectively? How could you improve the design?
Create a Paper Circuit
Challenge: Use a battery and LED to make a simple working circuit.
Materials: Coin-cell battery, LED, copper tape or aluminum foil, paper, and tape.
How to try it: Draw a circuit path on paper. Connect the positive and negative sides of the battery to the matching sides of the LED using conductive tape or foil. Make sure the connections are secure.
Safety: Use only low-voltage batteries. Do not connect the battery terminals directly together, and stop if the battery becomes hot.
Design a Wind-Powered Sail
Challenge: Create a sail that moves a small paper vehicle across a table.
Materials: Paper, straws, tape, cardboard, bottle caps, and a fan.
How to try it: Build a lightweight vehicle with wheels and attach a sail. Place it in front of a fan and test how far it travels. Change the sail’s size or shape and compare the results.
What to explore: How do sail size, angle, and vehicle weight affect movement?
Make a Water Filter Model
Challenge: Build a model filter that removes visible particles from muddy water.
Materials: A cut plastic bottle, gravel, sand, cotton, coffee filter, and a container.
How to try it: Place the filter materials in layers inside the bottle, with the finest material near the bottom. Pour muddy water through the filter and observe the result.
Important: This activity does not make water safe to drink. Do not taste the filtered water.
Build a Straw Tower
Challenge: Build the tallest freestanding tower that can support a small object.
Materials: Drinking straws, tape, scissors, and a small lightweight object.
How to try it: Plan your structure, build a wide base, and test the tower as you add height. Redesign it if it bends or falls.
What to explore: Which shapes make the structure stable? What happens when you add diagonal supports?
Engineer Your Own Challenge
Choose an everyday problem and design a solution. Define the problem, brainstorm several ideas, build a prototype, test it, record what happened, and improve your design.

Remember: Engineers do not expect every first design to work perfectly. Testing, learning, and improving are part of the process.
